Port Stephens is a must visit destination on the NSW central coast. Situated just 2.5 hours north of Sydney this region consists of bustling cities such as Newcastle & delightful seaside towns such as; Shoal Bay, Nelson Bay & Anna Bay. This area boasts over 20 beautiful beaches with crystal clear, aquamarine waters ready to be discovered.
We’ve explored this pristine coastline and have come up with our top ways to actively explore this area, enabling you to make the most of your travels.
Above the Sea- Port Stephens Paddlesports
Port Stephens Paddlesports can set you up with anything you need to explore these crystal clear waters. From SUP board hire to kayak hire and guided tours these guys are your one stop shop to get the most out of discovering the sea. We’d recommend hiring their catamaran style paddle board for the ultimate seaside adventure. Check out our article How to explore the waters of Shoal Bay for the low down on why we highly recommend Michael and his crew for an unforgettable aquatic adventure.
Exploring the sand- Port Stephens 4WD Tours
The sand dunes of Anna Bay will have you transported to a faraway deserted destination where rolling hills run along the beach for as far as the eye can see. We’d recommend the big red truck company Port Stephens 4WD Tours for your dune discoveries.
Sand boarding is fun for all the family and a great workout for the legs too. Look out for the big red trucks and enjoy the bumpy ride out into the sandy hills. It’s just as much as a thrill as the sand boarding itself.
From above- Mt Tomaree National Park
The hike up to Tomaree Head is short and sweet providing 360 degree spectacular, panoramic views of Port Stephens. The hike is achievable for all as it’s only 2.2 km return wander with ample opportunities to rest along the way. If you’re feel energetic challenge yourself by running the trail instead.
Tomaree Head stands at 161 m above sea level and whales are a common site between May- October so be sure to take your binoculars to ensure you have a whale of a time.
Under the Sea- Let’s Go Adventures
For those of you who need to go deeper with your discoveries we recommend Let’s Go Adventures for your underwater needs. The highlight for us was the shore dives so don’t feel disheartened if the weather doesn’t permit you to head out to Broughton Island. From the Pretty Beach shore dive there was plentiful sea life inclusive of sea horses, octopi, ample fish and macros too.
