Shoal Bay is a picturesque cove nestled between Tomaree Head and Nelson Head on the Central Coast of NSW. It’s stunning, crystal clear, aquamarine waters inspire aquatic adventures for both humans and dolphins.
We’ve investigated the best way to explore these inviting waters and couldn’t advocate Michael and the crew at Port Stephens Paddlesports enough.
Port Stephens Paddlesports are your paddle sport specialists. Whether you’re after adventure or some splash and giggle these guys have you covered.
We’d recommend hiring their new Catamaran style Paddle Boards and make a day of adventuring. These boards are sold exclusively in Australia by Live Water Sports Australia and Port Stephens Paddlesports are the lucky ones to share them with you.
Why do we recommend these boards over standard SUP’s?
We believe that adventures are best had with others and these boards warrant fun-filled buddy adventures. These boards are built for stability, speed and capacity. The width of the boards provide both greater stability and space than the standard SUP enabling two people to play on the water together with enough room for a small esky, snorkel gear, fishing gear or even a deck chair for maximum relaxation.
The sturdiness of the boards provide little concern for moving about which makes sharing the paddling ideal. The catamaran style hull allows the board to glide through the ocean with ease. Say goodbye to fear of chop throwing you off your board as this style cuts through choppy waters with simplicity.
The perfect day itinerary would include packing a lunch to enjoy privately at Nelson Head before continuing onto Fly Point for a snorkel. It is not uncommon to see Dolphins cruising throughout the area so keep your eyes peeled for friendly fins.
For adventure lovers there are Kayak and SUP Tours which introduce you to the marine park aspect of the harbour whilst also highlighting some secret spots for you to explore that even some of the locals haven’t heard about.
If recreational splash and giggle is more your pace then we’d recommend renting a kayak or SUP board. The easy going waters of Shoal Bay allow for exploring the sea achievable for all levels of ability.
Port Stephens Paddlesports also take bookings for local activities allowing you to maximise your time in the area. Bookings include rock climbing, sand boarding and Dolphin Cruises.
Head on down and see Michael and the crew at their Shoal Bay shop front, located outside of Ramada Resort along Shoal Bay Road, to get planning your aquatic adventures today.
We love hearing about your experiences. What is your favourite way to explore Shoal Bay?
